Myths vs Truths about Mystery Snails

Myths vs Truths about Mystery Snails
(Myth: Flakes vs Truth: Variety/Emerald Growth)
The Diet: More Than Just a Cleanup Crew Myth: "Snails are just 'cleaners' that live on algae and fish flakes." Truth: Relying on leftovers will leave your snails malnourished. Mystery Snails need a protein-rich, varied diet to thrive. I recommend:
Fresh Veggies: Blanched zucchini, spinach, or even strawberries.
Variety: Algae wafers and high-quality pellets.
My Secret: I feed mine Emerald Growth Live Daphnia and Fish Food. It’s far more beneficial than the "junk" at the bottom of the tank and provides the protein they actually need.
The Shell: Calcium is very critical in the water column along with their diet. You can use:
  • Cuttlebone
  • ground up eggshells (Cleaned out first and baked)
  • Snello (Snail-Jello) recipes are a great way to "hide" calcium in their food!
The Great Escape:
The 3-Inch Rule Truth: Mystery snails have both gills and lungs. They use a "siphon" tube to pump air from the surface.
  • The Gap: You must leave a 3-inch gap at the top. This gives them air to breathe and a safe place to lay their egg clutches above the water.
  • The Lid: Never leave your tank open. Mystery Snails are world-class escape artists and will end up on your floor if you aren't careful!
